“Hello, and welcome! Thank you for coming over
to my corner of the blogosphere. My name is Elisa. I’m Italian, I was born in Sardinia, where I lived a lovely but somewhat sheltered
life. And much to everyone’s hilarity, I had a dream of living an entirely
different kind of life, one where I met people from other places and other
cultures, and learned foreign languages. At the time, in my little-girl’s mind,
that dream had a simpler shape: becoming a translator and moving to Los Angeles. That’s pretty
much a fairy tale to someone born in a small island in the middle of the Mediterranean, so people had a tendency to chuckle when I
shared my dream. Jerks. Of course, being me, people’s skepticism only made me
more determined, as in “damn if I’m not going to do it now just so they can eat
their words” and so at the age of 17 I moved to Milan, and then one year later
to Los Angeles, where – that’s right, naysayers – I became a translator. There
I also met my husband, and that’s where I stayed for 3 1/2 years. After that,
our job took us to Copenhagen,
Denmark.
Short-lived adventure: 6 months later we moved to Switzerland, where my husband is
from. One good thing that happened there was the birth of our two daughters. As
for the rest… not so much. If I had
started a blog then, there would have been a serious lack of upbeat posts –
dare I say, there may have been a few posts that consisted exclusively of
swearing – because after spending the first few months in Zurich, I was seduced
by the beauty of the Swiss countryside and made the (very, very bad) decision
to move to said countryside for 5 years. If you don’t know me, let’s just say
that “I’m not a country person” is a major understatement. After 5 years of
farmland misery we finally moved back to Zurich,
and just when Switzerland
was starting to feel like a slightly better fit, we moved again. To New York this time. And
that, my friends, is where I recovered the “me” that had been battered into
oblivion by conservatism and “Judgy McJudgerson” syndrome, and started having
fun again. I also started this blog, which was basically the “I’m the
Anti-Martha” kind of thing. It later evolved into something else, like my
passion for fashion, and more focus on expat life, when despite my protests we
had to move back to Zurich,
Switzerland.
Alas, a challenge: can I keep busy and survive far away from New York without going crazy? Will the
beautiful lake, the parks, the chocolate, the mountains, the cheese dishes and
fabulous bakeries be enough? Or will I find
some hidden treasures? I’m ready Zurich
– bring it on. As for you… glad you are still there and and still reading! I
hope you enjoy my blog. If you do, feel free to drop me a comment or an e-mail!
And remember: wherever you live, whatever you do… don’t let the bastards get
you down! And also, no white socks with black shoes, ok?”
