montanelliana a splendide rappresentazioni artistiche, antiche e
lettori.

Roma. The passenger.
segnali in direzione opposta.
A ben
capirla e guarirla - o quantomeno provarci - bisognerebbe considerarla
cittadina, all'inizio della Repubblica, fino all'eccellenza della
Cina, senza dimenticare i popoli nomadi dell'Asia Centrale.

2034: A Novel of the Next World War by Elliot Ackerman
From two former military officers and award-winning authors, a
chillingly authentic geopolitical thriller that imagines a naval clash
between the US and China in the South China Sea in 2034--and the path
from there to a nightmarish global conflagration.
On March 12, 2034, US Navy Commodore Sarah Hunt is on the bridge of her flagship, the guided missile destroyer USS John Paul Jones,
conducting a routine freedom of navigation patrol in the South China
Sea when her ship detects an unflagged trawler in clear distress, smoke
billowing from its bridge. On that same day, US Marine aviator Major
Chris "Wedge" Mitchell is flying an F35E Lightning over the Strait of
Hormuz, testing a new stealth technology as he flirts with Iranian
airspace. By the end of that day, Wedge will be an Iranian prisoner, and
Sarah Hunt's destroyer will lie at the bottom of the sea, sunk by the
Chinese Navy. Iran and China have clearly coordinated their moves, which
involve the use of powerful new forms of cyber weaponry that render US
ships and planes defenseless. In a single day, America's faith in its
military's strategic pre-eminence is in tatters. A new, terrifying era
is at hand.
So begins a disturbingly plausible work of
speculative fiction, co-authored by an award-winning novelist and
decorated Marine veteran and the former commander of NATO, a legendary
admiral who has spent much of his career strategically outmaneuvering
America's most tenacious adversaries. Written with a powerful blend of
geopolitical sophistication and human empathy, 2034 takes us
inside the minds of a global cast of characters--Americans, Chinese,
Iranians, Russians, Indians--as a series of arrogant miscalculations on
all sides leads the world into an intensifying international storm. In
the end, China and the United States will have paid a staggering cost,
one that forever alters the global balance of power.
Everything in 2034
is an imaginative extrapolation from present-day facts on the ground
combined with the authors' years working at the highest and most
classified levels of national security. Sometimes it takes a brilliant
work of fiction to illuminate the most dire of warnings: 2034 is all too
close at hand, and this cautionary tale presents the reader a dark yet
possible future that we must do all we can to avoid

The acclaimed author of Under the Harrow and A Double Life returns with her most riveting novel to date: the story of two sisters who become entangled with the IRA
A
producer at the BBC and mother to a new baby, Tessa is at work in
Belfast one day when the news of another raid comes on the air. The IRA
may have gone underground in the two decades since the Good Friday
Agreement, but they never really went away, and lately bomb threats,
security checkpoints, and helicopters floating ominously over the city
have become features of everyday life. As the news reporter requests the
public's help in locating those responsible for the robbery, security
footage reveals Tessa's sister, Marian, pulling a black ski mask over
her face.
The police believe Marian has joined the IRA, but
Tessa is convinced she must have been abducted or coerced; the sisters
have always opposed the violence enacted in the name of uniting Ireland.
And besides, Marian is vacationing on the north coast. Tessa just spoke
to her yesterday.
When the truth about Marian comes to light,
Tessa is faced with impossible choices that will test the limits of her
ideals, the bonds of her family, her notions of right and wrong, and her
identity as a sister and a mother. Walking an increasingly perilous
road, she wants nothing more than to protect the one person she loves
more fiercely than her sister: her infant son, Finn.
Riveting, atmospheric, and exquisitely written, Northern Spy is
at once a heart-pounding story of the contemporary IRA and a moving
portrait of sister- and motherhood, and of life in a deeply divided
society.
The Consequences of Fear: A Maisie Dobbs Novel by Jacqueline Winspear
As Europe buckles under Nazi occupation, Maisie Dobbs investigates a possible murder that threatens devastating repercussions for Britain's war efforts in this latest installment in the New York Times bestselling mystery series.
October 1941. While on a delivery, young Freddie Hackett, a message runner for a government office, witnesses an argument that ends in murder. Crouching in the doorway of a bombed-out house, Freddie waits until the coast is clear. But when he arrives at the delivery address, he’s shocked to come face to face with the killer.
Dismissed by the police when he attempts to report the crime, Freddie goes in search of a woman he once met when delivering a message: Maisie Dobbs. While Maisie believes the boy and wants to help, she must maintain extreme caution: she’s working secretly for the Special Operations Executive, assessing candidates for crucial work with the French resistance. Her two worlds collide when she spots the killer in a place she least expects. She soon realizes she’s been pulled into the orbit of a man who has his own reasons to kill—reasons that go back to the last war.
As Maisie becomes entangled in a power struggle between Britain’s intelligence efforts in France and the work of Free French agents operating across Europe, she must also contend with the lingering question of Freddie Hackett’s state of mind. What she uncovers could hold disastrous consequences for all involved in this compelling chapter of the “series that seems to get better with every entry” (Wall Street Journal).

"Evok[es] the great Agatha Christie classics…Pay close attention to seemingly throwaway details about the characters’ pasts. They are all clues.” -- New York Times Book Review
A
wedding celebration turns dark and deadly in this deliciously wicked
and atmospheric thriller reminiscent of Agatha Christie from the New York Times bestselling author of The Hunting Party.
The bride – The plus one – The best man – The wedding planner – The bridesmaid – The body
On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It’s a wedding for a magazine, or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed.
But perfection is for plans, and people are all too human. As the champagne is popped and the festivities begin, resentments and petty jealousies begin to mingle with the reminiscences and well wishes. The groomsmen begin the drinking game from their school days. The bridesmaid not-so-accidentally ruins her dress. The bride’s oldest (male) friend gives an uncomfortably caring toast.
And then someone turns up dead. Who didn’t wish the happy couple well? And perhaps more important, why?
