Il test doveva essere condotto di giorno, da personale appositamente preparato ma, a causa di un parallelo calo nella rete che forniva l'energia alla vicina Kiev, il via libera per ridurre la potenza del reattore di Chernobyl senza rischiare deficit di fornitura, venne dato solo di notte, quando era in servizio il personale del turno successivo, completamente all'oscuro delle procedure di emergenza. L’esplosione e il conseguente incendio del reattore n. 4 provocano, a tutt’oggi, il più grave disastro nucleare della storia.
